"As Western Yelanji men, we would marry "eastern Yelanji Jalbu" from the coastal regions. In this artwork, old Ngurrku (owl), is perched high on a mountain in the heart of our country, like a protector ensuring there is no wrong marriages by Yelanji Lore. From my teachings, this is how I've processed the information passed on by my elders in knowing kinship systems, boundaries and forbidden country that's relevant today. Man and woman in this painting are intertwined as one (junu mundu), and I've highlighted. the arrow designs throughout the painting - symbolic or our traditional designs when painting up for celebration, black bird is jillan jillan, police man bird who is also a watch man for any wrong doings in our country. The fish and rivers are Mitchell river, they have their own dreaming story that I can't share at this stage." - Troy Jungaji Brady
